When targeting flathead in deeper water, allow the lure to sink down to the bottom, and then sharply lift the rod tip to 90 degrees to the surface of the water. Lower the rod and wait for the line to indicate that the lure has hit the bottom again. Repeat this action until you hook a fish, or you reach the boat.

Try casting the lightly-weighted grub out as far as you can while fishing over shallow water, then, while keeping the rod tip high, slowly wind it in, creating a small V shape in the water s surface.
