CrocodileDreaming
The circles in the reproduction of the traditional painting Crocodile Dreaming represent the life forces of the land and the colours of the circles symbolise the changing colours of the land. The female crocodile knew when the wet season approached and how high the water would rise and built her nest above the water mark to protect her burrow. Aboriginals respected and studied the crocodiles breeding cycles and also knew in advance, from the crocodile, how high the water would rise during wet season. The female crocodile would dig deep into the ground and make a warm protected burrow out of decaying vegetation. The curved tail of the female crocodile represents her defensive stance to protect her eggs from predators such as male crocodiles and goannas. Crocodile eggs were collected by Aboriginals, they respected what the mother Crocodile offered and would carefully dig up the nest and only take some but never all the eggs.

ARTIST INFORMATION
Colin Jones was born in 1947 in Queensland Australia, and is of Kaladoon and Nunuckle tribal descent. As a young boy, Colin learned to paint from his grandfather. Colins multi-layered dot paintings tell the stories of his ancestral lands, where the rain forest, rivers and land connect. In these depictions, there are small foot and hand prints telling the stories of Aboriginal people roaming the land.
