Joaquin Phoenix stars in this comedy drama based on the real life story of John Callahan. When alcoholic John Callahan (Phoenix) is involved in a near-fatal car accident, he is forced to re-evaluate his life as he faces the rest of his days in a wheelchair. With encouragement from his girlfriend Annu (Rooney Mara) he enrolls into Alcoholics Anonymous where he meets his enthusiastic sponsor Donny (Jonah Hill). Encouraged by Donny's zest for life, John develops a proactive attitude and decides to put his thoughts into pictures which get picked up as newspaper cartoons, propelling him into a world of fame and fortune. The cast also includes Jack Black, Tony Greenhand and Beth Ditto.
