The comedy begins in San Quentin, where Ronnie Jackson (Bob Hope), awaiting execution, goes into a flashback account of how he was mistaken for a private eye and tries to become one in order to aid a mystery woman (Dorothy Lamour), menaced by gangsters, who get rid of him by framing him as a killer.
