About the nano:

The Arduino Nano is a small, breadboard - friendly Arduino development board based on the ATmega328. The main differences between the Arduino UNO and the Arduino Nano are the USB connection and the method of interfacing.

The USB is a Mini-B USB cable which most people will have laying around and the method of interfacing with the Nano is by inserting it into a breadboard, rather than mounting wires directly to the headers.

NOTE: You could theoretically use female - female headers, but a breadboard is much more convenient to allow power to be accessed by multiple devices etc.
