RECYCLED Outdoor Rug | Tiwi Islands Tutuni Design 3m Square Red Black

An authentic Tiwi Aboriginal design created with recycled plastics. Tutuni is a new and unique Tiwi design in striking red and black. This signature style is deeply embedded in Tiwi artist, Tictac Moore.

The land of the Tiwi people comprises of two larger islands, Bathurst Island and Melville Island. The Tiwi Islands are separated from the Australian mainland by the Apsley Strait. They are situated in the Timor Sea only north of Darwin. The Tiwi Islands has a rich culture where art plays a very important role.

The name for the design is 'Tutuni' which means spear in Tiwi. Tictac has replicated the spear in a photo of her Grandpa, Allie Miller Mungatopi to design this mat. Everything Tictac knows of her Grandpa has been passed down through stories, and most of the photos she holds of him have come from books. In one of those books, there is a photo of him standing holding a spear, painted up and dressed ready for a ceremony. It is this spear she has used for the design.

You can also see Tictac's representation of the sun in the centre of this design. This reflects her skin group. This symbol is iconic for her and features in most of her art. This intricate and geometric design is perfect for a teaching tool to open conversation about culture, family and community, and how we fit into this bigger picture.

Made with recycled plastic, this Tiwi Aboriginal design mat is waterproof, easy to clean and UV treated. It is a perfect way to celebrate diversity on outdoor gatherings and while camping.
