Improving upon what they learned with earlier rims, the new aluminium rims use a wider 30mm extrusion. With a little extra material to support the rim's downwall, the new rims are showing a 15% increase in impact resistance over previous generations of rim. The rim has been engineered to dent inward in any sort of extreme impact scenario so that the tyre and wheel will hold air and get you to the end.
